As they say in the official language of Uganda…Hello!

After a total of 25 hours of traveling, one major delay, and standing behind a woman determined to get her full bottle of Southern Comfort through security at the airport, I have arrived safely!

By the time I arrived it was 1:15am on Sunday and I was more than ready for bed. It was about a 45 minute drive from Entebbe (airport) to Kampala (the capital) where I am staying until tomorrow. I wish that it had been light out so that I could have taken some pictures to show you guys. The major difference I noticed even upon landing was the lack of lights. I feel like when you land at any airport in the US you can see the city from miles away in the air while here it was pitch black until the wheels were on the ground (which may have attributed to the less than smooth landing)

My only tasks for today besides getting everything ready for tomorrow were to first find an ATM to withdrawal Ugandan currency and to second buy a Ugandan phone. Luckily the hotel that I am staying at is directly next to a “mall” so this didn’t require much traveling around. I do have to say that the malls here are relatively similar to something you would find in the US ( minus the soldiers walking around with machine guns).

And with that, let me introduce you to my first Ugandan friend!

IMG_0850 I guess I must have looked lost since Sam came up to me asking if I needed any help. He took me to the store and helped me pick out a phone and get all squared away. We then spent some of the afternoon chatting and I learned all about his journalism major at a university in Kampala. If you can’t tell by his hat, he LOVES the US. He hopes to work in the US film industry one day so everyone keep your eyes peeled for this future star!

Tomorrow I will be headed to Gulu which will be my home for the next 2 and a half months! I will make sure to post pictures when I get internet access again.

PS- big birthday shout-out to Anne, Julianna and Caroline! Hope you guys have the best day!
